well, Melbourne Cup and the whole nation went a bit crazy and excited.
Google Australia adjusted to this event of course
In some states it's even a public holiday. Not in NSW though, so we had a "meeting" booked from 2.30 until 4.30 ;-)
At around 11 our team gathered together to have a look at this year's horses for maling a bet (betting is quite common in Australia).
Allianz Center (and Sussex St) I'm currently placed around the middle of the building overlooking parts of Darling Harbour (if I go to the window *g*)
I thought if I even get paid for watching a horse race...I go for it and bet 20 bucks.
I chose number 12 "Purple Moon" because of number 12 and it was supposed to be a reasonable good horse. Then I heard some other names and decided to go for "Mahler" (one of the favorites) and "Zipping" (due to its funny name) but not the favorite itself "Master O'Reilly".
Al, Jem, Niro and Mark
We had to queue at the pub for almost 20 minutes to hand our money in. In the meantime I reconsidered my bet and - after asking Niro how it works - made a "box bet" meaning you choose 6 horses and you win if you get the first 3 right. So I picked my 3 already chosen horses and two other nice names. For the remaining spot I crossed number 4 randomly (without knowing the name).
Hand in the bet and my twen....
"Sorry man, number 4 is not running this race, you have to take another one"
Sweet! I knew number 21 was out but embarrassed myself a bit by not knowing that...what da hack, I'm European! ;-) So i just crossed 6 instead and we went back to work...
Mark(us) and I went into the pub during lunch time already to have a pizza and a Corona (beer), back up at 2, to level 13 for the race, no atmosphere there, up to level 13 to be just right for the kick off.
3 minutes and a breath taking finish later the race was over!
Great! 2nd place: Purple Moon, 3rd place: Mahler, 4th place: Zipping
and first place "Efficient". "Who the fxxx is "Efficient"?" I thought...stupid number 6...I thought...hoooold on a minute...no shxx! I picked that "outsider"! Woooohoooo! Fabtabulous!
"My Shout!" Only Mark, April and I spent the "after race" time in the pub. Too bad for the others ;-)
Mic winning 209,50$ (229,50 minus my 20)

my first place in Sydney, Darlinghurst which is known for two things:
1. good bars / clubs and
2. the gay community
Especially the gay "environment' is just great cause there is quite a chance that your bar guy might be gay. At the "Digitalism" gig it happened for the first time to me that I order a vodka orange. The guy puts the vodka in, the juice in, looks at me, smiles and puts more vodka in it :-O
- you gotta know that this is actually forbidden by law. You need to measure the alcohol amount with a shooter glas - Sorry, I'm digressing (abschweifen)...

Anyway, this is it.

and here it is
living room
including a TV with 4 channels where you can't turn up the sound above 20, the menu isn't working and the remote is lost *g*

recently before having a look at a room in Bondi
This couple showing off at Bondi Beach was actually lucky with the weather cause it more or less rained the last week
We went to Aldi on the way back. In Australia it would have been my first Aldi visit
but they were closed already (Sunday at 5) ...grmpf

On Wednesday (07/11) we got free tickets for "The Walls" (link) gig in the "Metro Theater" (link) on George St. Pretty much on the opposite site of a nice club called "3 Wise Monkeys" (link) where we've been quite a few times...
these monkeys always makes me think of how a conservative person tries to cope with reality...
Anyway, the Metro Theater was on the other site of the street. We didn't really know them but who cares...I found out just now that they stayed quite some time "in business", the tickets actually were more expensive than we thought (42$!) and we saw'em on their first Australia Tour. The supporting band was a nice one-man-show who did some sort of a country rock mixture.
supporting one-man-show
one of two lead singers
and some Becks beer ;-)
On Elena's and last evening (Thursday) we went to the "Cargo" bar - as usual on a Thursday between 6-8pm - and had some free vodkas (these 2 pics came from her birthday night out
my recommendation: vanilla vodka with apple juice and guava - mhhhhh, delicious!
After that we had a nice time in a sushi bar (quite cheap here: 2,50 - 3,50$ for a plate)...
What can you do on a Sunday where you don't have any plans but the sun is shining?
Listening to music from the ongoing "African festival" and relaxing in the Hyde Park
having a look a the cathedrale (only 247 days till world youth day 2008 *g*)
or the water fountain and the Sydney Tower
It became a little habbit for me to "jump" a lot of places...it's just so much fun ;-)
and looks good...a Japanese couple saw me, copied it and seemed pretty cheered up when they got a result similar to this ;-)
I hereby start a new community:
Jump The World And Feel Free (to join)!

noter regarding "joining":
I decided to do some sports again (after month of being lazy) and sign up for fitness / boxing ;-)

Overall a nice evening but regarding the music it's been a bit too soft for me (except for 2 songs).
On the way back through Hyde Park we bumped into a couple of possums which stopped us for around 10 minutes cause Steffi goes crazy when it comes to cute animals and starts to squeak *g*

...did you know how you can recognize (young) Japanese tourists all over the world? And I don't mean running around with a camera. No, on almost every picture they either look a bit bored/unexcited (the older folks) or they smile and do a Victory gesture. Seriously. Aaaaaalways!
